Swimmer Michael Phelps Breaks Record With Eighth Gold Medal
By Hollywood Gossip | August 17, 2008
Swimmer Michael Phelps won his eighth gold medal at the Olympics in Beijing Sunday – a record for any one Game.
The 23-year-old, who smashed seven world records this week, is also the highest achieving Olympian of all time with a total of 14 gold medals.
“It all happened here this week,” said Phelps, who had fought back tears as he accepted the medal. “[Eight is] a lucky number for me now, too. Seeing 8-8-08 and the opening ceremonies starting at eight – I guess it was maybe meant to be.”
Phelps’ performance in the 4×100m medley relay Sunday notched him above Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He had tied Spitz’s record on Saturday.
“I’m lost for words,” Phelps said. “The whole thing, every race, one after the other from winning by one-hundredth of a second to finishing if off with a world record. It’s an amazing experience.”
Who’s Phelp’s biggest fan?
On Saturday, Spitz said Phelps is “the greatest racer who ever walked the planet.
“It goes to show you that not only is this guy the greatest swimmer of all time and the greatest Olympian of all time, he’s maybe the greatest athlete of all time,” he added.

Ellen DeGeneres and Fiancee Portia de Rossi to Wed This Weekend
By Hollywood Gossip | August 15, 2008
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, 35, will wed this weekend in California, Usmagazine.com has learned exclusively.
The pair are planning a small, intimate ceremony with only a few close friends and family.
Following the California Supreme Court’s monumental ruling that same sex couple’s have the “right to marry,” DeGeneres announced she planned to wed her longtime girlfriend on a taping of her show in May.
“It’s something that we’ve wanted to do and we want it to be legal and we are very, very excited,” DeGeneres, 50, gushed.
DeGeneres reflected on their upcoming nuptials at the Daytime Emmy Awards in Hollywood in June.
“I think someday people will look back on this like women not having the right to vote and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous that we don’t all have the same rights,” DeGeneres said.
Of the preparations, DeGeneres joked, “Planning a wedding is very stressful. It’s crazy. My gardener is now invited.”
DeGeneres and de Rossi began dating in December 2004.
“I feel like I found my perfect fit,” DeGeneres said of de Rossi in an interview with the Advocate.
“She’s taught me lessons about myself, and I feel like I’ve taught her,” DeGeneres added.

JESSICA ALBA’S OLYMPICS FEVER
By Hollywood Gossip | August 14, 2008
Jessica Alba had a lovely Sunday brunch at La Conversation in West Hollywood on August 10. Dining with the two loves of her life, hubby Cash Warren and baby Honor Marie, Jessica looked cute and put together in her summery white eyelet frock (similar to Woo’s Jasmine Dress in White) rocking her signature side braid and a patterned scarf around her neck. Jess completed her ‘fit with funky double strapped flipflops (try Matiko’s Katia Sandal in White), a large black satchel (check out Carla Mancini’s Front Pocket Double Handle Bag in Black), her fav gold hoops (just like Lana’s Miami Earrings in Yellow Gold) and brown spotted sunnies (try JeeVice’s Evil in Gold Striped).
After spending the weekend holed up watching the Olympics, Jess took the time to gush about her fav moments on her MySpace blog, “Cash and I went crazy. The shot of Michael Phelps after the race ended cheering with his teammates is so memorable. The last time I got this excited watching sports was when Baron was in the NBA playoffs. Next year we get to watch him in Los Angeles. Go Clippers!!”
Besides her Olympics fanaticism, J-Alba recently spilled to the press about her picture-perfect relationship with her hubby. She said, “What’s wonderful is that I have a man right now and, God willing, we can be married forever. He wants the same things in life. He wants to adopt and have a big family and he believes in marriage forever. It can really happen if we want it to.” Sounds like the honeymoon period has not worn off yet for these lovebirds!
What do you think, can a producer-actress marriage survive these days in Hollywood?

Mark Spitz Calls Michael Phelps ‘The Greatest’
By Hollywood Gossip | August 14, 2008
As the world watches to see if Michael Phelps makes it to eight gold medals in a single Olympiad this weekend, the athlete whose record Phelps hopes to beat – Mark Spitz – is graciously wishing the young American phenomenon well.
“He is the single greatest Olympic athlete of all time now,” Spitz, 58, said on Thursday’s Today show, speaking from a California studio. “He will probably be the single greatest athlete compared to anybody in any century – the 20th, the 21st century and whatever.
“And, you know, they say you judge a person’s character by the company they keep, and I’m glad I’m keeping company with Michael Phelps.”
Spitz also said, “I’ll be happy to stand aside and let him carry the torch. He’s just one great athlete.”
Spitz won a record seven gold medals at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and two more in Montreal four years later – for a total of nine, as well as (between 1968 and 1972) a silver, a bronze, five Pan American golds, 31 National U.S. Amateur Athletic Union titles and eight U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. In all, Spitz has set 33 world records.
The Phelps Factor
As for the Phelps phenomenon, in Beijing the 23-year-old made history this week with his 10th and 11th gold medals, the most ever won by any Olympian. In five days he’s been victorious in five races and set five world records.
Phelps still has three finals to go – a total of six races, including heats and semis – to shatter the Spitz record.
Saluting Phelps’s concentration, Spitz says he realizes what the “Baltimore Bullet” is going through and the effort it takes to stay focused. “To master all the pressure he’s got is remarkable,” says Spitz.
Spitz also dismissed reports that he’s irked by having not been invited to Beijing, saying that previous commitments stateside and his heavy workload would have prevented him from making the trip.

David Beckham to Help Close Olympics
By Hollywood Gossip | August 14, 2008
David Beckham will star in the Aug. 24 closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, PEOPLE has confirmed.
“David is going to be in the surprise finale. They always have a segment to do the handover, to showcase the next city to host the Olympics,” a source tells PEOPLE.
When the Games end at Beijing’s National Stadium, the distinction of hosting the Summer Olympics transfers to London in 2012 – with the international soccer star there to help mark the transition.
“He was very involved in the London bid to get it, and as a Londoner he is incredibly proud that the Olympics will be in London,” the source added. “He is passionate about it and looking forward to the games in 2012.”
But Beckham’s already sports-packed schedule won’t leave much time for a leisurely stay in China.
“If his [calendar] works out, he will be able to go from the L.A. Galaxy game to Beijing,” says the source. “It also depends on if he gets picked for the next England game, as he can go on from there.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt Reveals New Thinner Body
By Hollywood Gossip | August 14, 2008
In November, Jennifer Love Hewitt was criticized for weight gain after photos surfaced of her looking fuller-figured in a bikini in Hawaii.
“We know what you ate this summer, Love – everything!” TMZ.com notoriously wrote.
Now, the Ghost Whisperer star has the last laugh.
In the new issue of Us Weekly, on newsstands now, the 32-year-old shows off the new body she got after just 10 weeks and her trainer reveals to Us exclusively how she lost 18 pounds.
“I am in a pretty good workout regimen that I like, so it inspired me to keep it up,” Hewitt tells Us. “The energy level and the way I feel now is great.”
“With her, it’s not, ‘I want to look good in that dress,’” trainer Stevie Sant’Angelo tells Us. “She wanted to start moving around because she thought it would make her feel better.
“She told me, ‘They said some rude, mean things, but that’s not why I wanted to change,’” Sant’Angelo says.

Madonna Turning 50 With World Tour On Her Mind
By Hollywood Gossip | August 13, 2008
LONDON (Reuters) - Madonna won’t have much time to fret about turning 50.
While many people passing the milestone may prefer to pause and reflect, the “queen of pop” is in the midst of final preparations for her world tour which kicks off in Cardiff, Wales, on August 23, a week after her birthday.
If previous shows are anything to go by, the 40-plus “Sticky & Sweet” dates around the globe will put Madonna under the kind of physical and mental strain that would test a woman half her age.
But the world’s most successful female recording artist has never let age, sex or background get in her way, and has remained in the ascendancy with an uncanny ability to reinvent herself just when the old Madonna was nearing her sell-by date.
Her latest reincarnation is a shrewd businesswoman, after she severed ties with long-term record label Warner Brothers to sign up with Live Nation, a company that until recently specialized in music tours.
As well as earning a reported $120 million over the life of the agreement, Madonna appeared to be among the first to recognize which way the music industry was heading.
Recorded music, many artists now believe, is making them less money than live performing, meaning they are looking to spend less time in the recording studio and more on the stage.
The last few years have not all been easy for Madonna, however.
A celebrity who often bristles in the media glare, Madonna may be universally admired but she is not universally loved.
Her decision in 2006 to adopt a young Malawian boy whose mother died was controversial both in the southern African country and further afield.
Aid groups in Malawi said the authorities had bent the rules to accommodate the super-star, and the adoption was challenged in court. Not for the first time, Madonna prevailed and the adoption went through.
Madonna has two other children — son Rocco with her husband the British film director Guy Ritchie, and daughter Lourdes from a previous relationship.
She directed her first feature film that came out in 2008, and although reviews were mixed, there were harsh words for a woman some feel should forget about movies and stick to music.
Her eight-year marriage to Ritchie has also come under increasing scrutiny after tabloid newspapers in Britain, where she spends much of her time, have reported that the couple are planning to divorce.
Both Ritchie and Madonna have denied the reports.
CONTROVERSY
Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan on August 16, 1958, the third of eight children in a devout Italian-Catholic family.
Her big breakthrough came in 1984 when she signed a record deal and made her first two big hits “Like a Virgin” and “Holiday.”
The following year she married Hollywood wild boy Sean Penn and landed one of her most memorable screen roles in “Desperately Seeking Susan.”
Madonna then urged director Alan Parker to give her the biographical role of Argentine heroine Eva Peron in the musical film “Evita” that won her a Golden Globe Award in 1996.
She has appeared in over 20 films, several of which have bombed, most notably 2002’s “Swept Away,” directed by Ritchie.
Musically, she has few, if any real rivals.
The Recording Industry Association of America has described her as the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century and the second top-selling female artist in the United States.
Guinness World Records list her as the world’s most successful female recording artist of all time and she has sold an estimated 200 million albums. Her last tour, “Confessions,” became the top-grossing tour ever by a female artist.
The Sunday Times estimates Madonna and Ritchie’s fortune at around $600 million.
Much of Madonna’s success is built on her shock value.
In 1989, the video for “Like A Prayer,” her third transatlantic chart-topper, with its links between religion and eroticism, was condemned by the Vatican and caused Pepsi-Cola to cancel a sponsorship deal with the star.
The resulting publicity helped the album of the same title to become a global bestseller.
In her 1990 “Blonde Ambition” tour, she famously wore a Jean Paul Gaultier conical bra and covered the stage in religious imagery. The Vatican called it “one of the most satanic shows in the history of humanity.”
At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards Madonna kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera as they performed her classic song “Like A Virgin.”

JESSICA ALBA HOOKED ON THE OLYMPICS
By Hollywood Gossip | August 13, 2008
Actress Jessica Alba has become such an Olympics fan she has taken to reporting on it in cyberspace.
The new mom admits she can’t get enough Olympic action as America and China compete to win the major medals haul in Beijing, and she has let everyone know how she has excited she is via her MySpace.com page.
Alba says she and her husband, Cash Warren, are chalking up hours in front of the TV as they watch the coverage of the 2008 games.
She writes, “Cash and I have been glued to the Olympics. How amazing was the opening ceremony?!? I still don’t know how they co-ordinated 2008 people to move in perfect sync.”
And she has become a big fan of America’s male swimming team, fronted by Michael Phelps, after it claimed a miracle gold in the relay: “The men’s 400M relay was insane. We were down by almost a half body length going into the final turn and then next thing you knew it was closer, closer, closer until we touched the wall first!
Cash and I went crazy.”

BREAKING NEWS: Sources: Jennifer Aniston & John Mayer Split
By Hollywood Gossip | August 13, 2008
Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer have called it quits, multiple sources confirm to PEOPLE.
“They had a great time together but they are just in different places in their lives right now,” says a source of Aniston, 39, and Mayer, 30, who kicked off their courtship in April.
A friend of Mayer adds that a reconciliation isn’t necessarily out of the question: “He never ends things with a clean slate. He likes to dwell on these relationships and sort everything out before saying goodbye for good.”
The split was first reported Wednesday by the U.K.’s Mirror, which said the couple split earlier this week, after initially deciding to spend some time apart.
Reps for Aniston and Mayer have declined to comment.
